Is this watermelon ripe?

Submitted by susan

Knock on the melon: If it produces a deep, hollow thump, the melon is probably ripe. Another good indicator is the side of the melon that rested on the ground while it was growing; it should be a rich, creamy yellow. If it's white, or green, that melon was picked before it was ripe. Keep on stepping.

A really dry 'pigtail' or stem is also a good indication of a ripe melon!

"Back in the day" as they say  they would cut a plug out so you could see and taste.
